But it WAS!
More than 30 years ago, Dr. John Perkins made an impact on me when he came to my home church in Connecticut to speak at our 1984 Fall Bible Conference. When we heard that a man by the same name would be speaking at the Cru Staff Conference in Colorado I thought maybe it was his son, or just another man by that name. To my surprise, the man I remember from that Bible Conference was the same man speaking at Cru15 – at 85 years of age.
In deference to his age and health, he delivered his message from a chair, but was barely able to remain in it due to his passion and enthusiasm. I was particularly moved by his description of 1970’s imprisonment for his involvement in a civil rights protest. While in jail, being tortured by his white jailer, Dr. Perkins had compassion – not only on his fellow tortured prisoners, but also on the bondage of hate that he saw in the faces of the jailers! This is what sparked a lifetime of racial reconciliation efforts – love and compassion! This short session, about 1/2 hour long, is worth watching!
