Charissa, our chef-to-be, gave herself a challenge this week! She offered to make fresh sushi rolls for Eric’s department at FamilyLife. In fact, she made a complete Japanese lunch with Edamame, Udon noodle soup (from scratch noodles, of course), and FIVE different kinds of sushi rolls! For days she has been doing prep work, and this morning she (with Amanda’s help) rolled almost 20 sushi rolls! Why all this work?
Well, our reasons were twofold. First, it was an awesome homeschooling lesson from a culinary arts perspective – she did the pricing, shopping, planning, and cooking – lots of details! The other reason was a fundraiser for her upcoming trip to speech and debate Nationals competition. I think she had success on both levels. An added benefit was a feeling of connection and support with the other folks at the ministry. When the girls get busy with school, friends, and other things it can be easy for them to forget why exactly we are here in Little Rock. Having Charissa interact with some of the FamilyLife folks – sharing her passions for food and speech & debate with them and having them ask her about her life and plans can help her remember that she is part of a bigger picture – the ministry of FamilyLife.
