In response to the much hyped February 13th release of the R rated movie “Fifty Shades of Grey”, FamilyLife Today had Dannah Gresh and Dr. Juli Slattery on the radio this week to talk about their book “Pulling Back the Shades”. You may wonder if there is even a need for Christians to join the discussion regarding this ‘erotica’ book/movie, but I can tell you that even in this house of teen and pre-teen girls we have been discussing it. “How did my girls even hear of such things?”, you may ask. Because it is EVERYWHERE! – from a trip to the bookstore, to the morning news shows, to commercials on many YouTube videos they watch (even those directed at children), and several television commercials.  Fifty Shades of Grey (the book) has topped best-seller lists around the world, including those of the United Kingdom and the United States. The series has sold over 100 million copies worldwide and been translated into 52 languages, and set a record in the United Kingdom as the fastest-selling paperback of all time. The movie is on track to break ticket sales records. Why?

Women have legitimate longings that the Church has been afraid to talk about, and books like Fifty Shades of Grey exploit.

In their radio interview, as well as their book, the authors discuss five of those longing – The longing to be cherished, protected, and rescued by a man as well as the longing to be sexually alive and have opportunities to escape reality.  With solid Biblical teaching, and candid storytelling I would encourage you to read Pulling Back the Shades or listen to our two broadcasts at http://familylifetoday.com/program/fifty-shades-of-deception/
